Because my friends and family couldn't possibly be liberals and conservatives? 95% of the country fits into the "liberals and conservatives" slot. How can you not consider that to be personally insulting?

Because I don't expect people to be insulted when I express disagreement with them about politics.

Being able to disagree about politics is absolutely crucial for a functioning democracy.
