Automake and cmake at least always default to /usr/local{/bin,} as the prefix in my experience. Other than not mentioning that, yes more people should know the various prefix conventions, it would save a lot of installation hassle.


No, Ruby's default is to install to /usr/local. It was just an illustrative example used to demonstrate potential complications from not using /usr/local. The submission wasn't a guide to building Ruby.
