Perhaps. But we should be able to do better. Pygame, for example -- The example I found[1] looks quite nice and easy to use:

Pygame can be a pain to install sometimes. Things that package dependencies into a single binary (like Love2D) are easier to setup, but often lack the out-of-the-box interactivity that JavaScript tools provide.


Pygame is effectively just SDL.

If you are going to depend on OpenGL anyway, Pyglet is even nicer for newbies
