Ask HN: Can you recommend a podcast player/manager for Android?

What is your preferred podcast player (for Android)?

I was using Google Podcasts for years and that was great, but now they're shutting down so I have to find another podcast player. I tried consuming them through YT Music, but really hated having my podcasts and music all jumbled together.

So far the next best thing I found is AntennaPod, but something about it is less intuitive and feels clunky/disorganized to me.

I'd especially love to find something with these features:

* Comprehensive online search/discovery for podcasts and individual episodes through the app

* Group subscriptions into folders/tags/_something_ to help me organize the list

* Sleep timer with fading playback

* No in-app visual ads or other ad breaks that are not part of the podcast recording itself.

Paid options are fine, but ideally not subscriptions (I'll consider anything at this point though).

Thanks

I'm a big fan of Pocket Casts. https://pocketcasts.com/

Another vote for Pocket Casts. The only thing I dislike about it is that the search feature can be janky at times, especially when it comes to non-English languages. No complaints other than that.

Yep, no contest, with the features you mentioned PocketCasts is what you want. My podcast app of choice anyway, but particularly suited to OP's needs.

Thank you, I'm trying it out now.

AntennaPod

-- Supports Searching

-- Can group subscriptions using tags

-- has got sleep timer (don't know about fading playback)

-- No ads

Thank you, though AntennaPod is the one that I mentioned I'm trying to move away from.

I've been using AntennaPod for years, about 2 years back they updated the UI into what it is today. Worse UI update of any app I use, it was simple before, now it's confusing, cramped, and just visually ugly.

Having said all that, I haven't found anything better. Watching this thread with interest.

Sorry, somehow I missed that.

I like Podcast Republic (https://www.podcastrepublic.net/). Going through your list:

* Comprehensive online search/discovery for podcasts and individual episodes through the app

It does have a search for other podcasts, but could stand to be better. However, you can easily add an apple podcasts URL or RSS feed if you find the podcase elsewhere

* Group subscriptions into folders/tags/_something_ to help me organize the list

You can group subscriptions or episodes by playlists

* Sleep timer with fading playback

Pretty sure it can do this. You can also set default hours for sleep operation so if you wake up at 2am and want to listen to a podcast to get back to sleep you don't have to re-setup the sleep function.

* No in-app visual ads or other ad breaks that are not part of the podcast recording itself.

Not that I have noticed.

I like that this one seems to be a one-time payment, unlike Pocket Casts. I'm trying out both right now.

I've been using Podcast Addict for several years now and haven't had any complaints.

Apple Podcast app works well for me
