Logseq's got a lot of promise, but unfortunately the inability to sync for without a subscription (last I checked) was an issue for me. I use Things 3 & UpNote now, both are quite nice but importantly allow a one-time purchase. I still miss some Logseq features. So a question to perhaps someone who's been in a similar situation - what platform would you suggest?

Logseq are just text files stored in a folder in your computer.

You can use pretty much any generic file sync tool and it should work. Mobile is trickier but there are ways if you really want it.

If you are on iOS then you can use Working Copy [1] to sync notes through GitHub, GitLab, etc.

To automate the process you can create siri shortcuts like

* Obsidian is opened -> Pull the repository

* Obsidian is closed -> Commit Changes -> Push to the repository

Might not be for everyone, but using git to index markdown notes + linking it against cloud storage like dropbox/icloud to have it available on phones/tables have served me well over the last 5 years.

I used Obsidian with iCloud sync and a sync plugin for a long time.

Then I wanted to support the project and subscribed to their official sync service. I still use the sync plugin, but only for write-only backups
