I have a FireCube and if my Internet connection goes down then I can't watch TV at all. Even the Plex server I have in my closet. It's super annoying! In fact, I'm ==this== close to ditching it and going with AppleTV. The experience is just so much better.

You might be able to load VLC onto the FireCube and then enable DLNA on your Plex server
