We use light to control how living cells produce therapeutic proteins — optogenetic cell engineering, custom illumination hardware, and real-time ML bioprocess control — to drive down cost and scale up production of next-generation therapies.
With our technology scaling from the lab to the real world of biomanufacturing, we're now hiring a foundational software engineer to build the platform tying together our hardware, firmware, cloud, and internal tooling — high ownership over architecture and direction. This is a systems role across the hardware/software boundary (not web/SaaS), working directly with embedded, mechanical, data, and even bioprocess engineers.
Looking for: strong systems thinking; Python + one of TS/Go/Rust; cloud-connected services; comfort interfacing and debugging software against hardware (serial, TCP/IP); Linux. MS + 5 yrs or BS + 7 yrs. Bonus: Industrial IoT (MQTT Sparkplug B, OPC UA, SCADA/MES), regulated-industry data integrity (21 CFR Part 11, GAMP 5), or embedded C/C++.
Let's build a better food system together, one line of code at a time!

About the company:
Ark is a venture-backed, Boston-based, seed-stage startup accelerating the transition to a better food system for the planet and its inhabitants by creating industrial scale, affordable, and intelligent bioreactors. We're a B2B company on a mission to 100x the industry’s bioreactor capacity by 2035 - powering the most important infrastructure buildout of this generation to transform how people consume meat.
About the role:
Ark's Data Systems team is hiring a software engineer to build out and own our software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop simulation test systems used to validate the functionality and reliability of our systems and the interfaces between them. These test systems ensure the safety and reliability of our bioreactors while enabling fast-paced iteration on our control strategies and hardware revisions.
