From people I know working Data Center Ops at Google. They were super pissed about the NSA tapping at the time and steps were definitely taken to further encrypt their data in transit.
Of course executives at Google may have handed over a set of keys to the NSA after this was done. If I had to bet I would say that the NSA has more than one way to get whatever data they want from any of the top tech companies. Either via stealing, insiders or coercion they have many options.
Its not exclusive. Bad actors are working on whatever they are paid to build, by other bad actors with less technical acumen and more money.
Edit: I should add, that most of the actual progress is being made by smart people who think its an interesting problem and are unaware or uncaring of the clear outcome of such tech.
HN is a biz first, tech second kida place. The tech is here mostly to make money, with some feelgood PR sprinkled around liberally. While I agree comemnts may go offtopic, I think there is some insight to be had when to move your company, and if this is one of those times.
One of my tech companies moved from the gulf area to the rockies a decade ago as a result of the looting and destruction following flooding from a hurricane. Having spent 4 years, and millions of dollars, it somehow seems relevant to a tech biz conversation
I...disagree...the majority of content (and comments) found within the first few pages on any given day is quite technical, IMO. Not saying it's good or bad, but my observation. Maybe we are experiencing different rankings?
Per tfa, the guy was not doxxed as much as he was misidetified. Most 'doxxing' is just public information that the 'victim' mistakenly thought was private. Address, name, even SSN are not private.
